235 [PGBSC Blog] Day 5 results from Olympic Trials in Montreal
234 [PGBSC Blog] update from Montreal
Sending you another quick update between heats and finals.
Tonight there will be some special events showing up at the Olympic Trials
and I encourage you to not miss this - I know there are lots of things to
do on a Saturday night.
I cannot let the cat out of the bag...but it has to do with some swimmers
that most of the parents in the club would have heard of...
There will be a very exciting 200 breast stroke race - one that will
absolutely make the crowd go crazy. No clear winner - it could go any way.
The buzz continues in Montreal. As we load up on the Metro subway - you
hear the majority of passengers talking about swimming. I also learned
last night from the Director of Quebec swimming that 2014 is the World
Masters Aquatics event at Parc Jean Drapeau in Montreal. 6000 or so
athletes to find their way to diving, waterpolo, swimming stardom.
It is a very proud moment when you are on deck officiating, and you look
down towards the ready room, and you see an orange cap, and a big smile
coming back to you. Yes - it was Katie Mann with the big grin - and
wanting to get out on the block.
As I watched Haley Black on deck last night in the B Final, she looked
calm, relaxed walking out to her lane, yet at the same time, you could tell
she was ready. A great race for her...and her family.
You find yourself getting consumed by the race - working with them stroke
for stroke, breathing for them, it is captivating. I must have swam a few
kilometres this week with our swimmers...in mind anyways. I think I better
go for a nap - isn't that what we are supposed to do after heats?
Enjoy tonight!

228 [PGBSC Blog] Montreal update from Parents
I thought I would send you a quick note from Montreal between heats and
finals. One thing I wanted to mention is the high level of parent
participation from Prince George for those swimmers attending. This is
fantastic and a testament to the commitment of the parents in the club.
Pierre, the CEO for Swim Canada, identified in his opening address Tuesday
night, that a HUGE thank you goes to the parents, grandparents, families
that support these swimmers. There are many sacrifices made over a very
long time to reach and attend an event like this, but the journey is worth
it. As I watch the days unfold, I am seeing this energy growing and
friendships formed.
As we watch all the swimmers in their events, the smiles are very enriching
and for some, the disappointments are life learning. One theme that is
consistent is "NEVER GIVE UP".
We see so many things at this event. Canadian Records broken, tv
interviews, volunteers in the hundreds and hundreds.
I have seen an upset in a Medal final from a swimmer in Lane 8 taking Gold
followed by second place in Lane 7. The ability to dig deep and keep
telling oneself YOU CAN, and NEVER GIVE UP, shows the true character of a
swimmer.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, the Olympic Pool is sold out. Rumours
of scalpers are around.
Buses from all around Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes are coming to
Montreal to watch the events. I thought it was getting louder every night,
but I think the best is still yet to come.
The roar of the crowd makes the hair on your body stand up as the athletes
are announced to their lanes. They disrobe following their long and
practiced warm up routine...bouncing around, slapping muscles, pressing on
goggles, shaking legs. They all have a routine that got them there and
they stare down their lane, until they hear the faint whistle by the
referee and the swimmers stand up on the blocks. And then, like someone
hit the mute button .... silence. You could hear a pin drop as the starter
says "Take your Marks". The swimmer in front of me has muscles twitching,
feet re-positioning to get a grip, hands holding on to the block as they
are about to release like an elastic band, and you hear them breathing - it
is so quiet.
I am holding my breath as they are on the starting block in front of me,
thinking about how many laps these swimmers have done in the pool to reach
this stage. How they applied themselves so diligently in practice to reach
the level that they are at. How they worked on each aspect of swimming to
sew them together to create a great swim.
Then goes the "flash" and the "beep".
The athletes all leap into the air in unison and the unmute button is
pressed
- the crowd releases their nervous tension into a huge GO!!!!!!
I smile. It is Priceless. This is the best swimming in Canada.
I see some swimmers looking nervous as they sit by me. Some of them are
very quiet, and some of them release some of that nervous energy by talking
to me before they race. I listen and say something encouraging - Nothing
new here, same race, different pool. You are here because you are good,
you earned it, now go for it.
Apparently the first night there were over 100,000 viewers in Canada
watching and the numbers of viewers were higher last night (Wed.). This
has been so successful that SPORTSNET looks like they will broadcast
Saturday night now as well, which originally was to be a soccer game.
The deck is very clean - that being - there are no timers, just judges.
Jerzy looks good and is very attentive to the swimmers. Marilyn King is
cooking, organizing, and looking after many of our athletes - supporting
our team well as she always does. Lee Black (and some of his family) is
out in the crowd taking pictures along with Metro and Rose Yakiwchuk who
brought their camera. It is nice to see the 4 University kids - Brian,
Kit, Grace and Katie interact with the club and wear the Cuda Cap. Sharon
Ludlow is cheering and you can see she has reconnected with many parents
from her travels with Danica. Mike and Cathe Moran also made it here,
after just being at CI's a few weeks ago - lots of travelling. Darrel and
Susan Mann flew the "all night flight" to get here to see Katie, and you
can see how proud they are of her accomplishments in the pool and in
academics, and the constant texting going on with Katie's sisters - Kirby
and Kelsey about what is going on in the pool.
These University kids are the same swimmers we watched years ago belly
flopping, learning to tumble turn, having pen tattoos on their back saying
"Eat my bubbles", and waving their hands encouraging the other swimmers to
go for it...and they still do that. You know something is right when you
see Grace Ni and her humongous shining smile come across the bleachers to
give you a big hug, say hi, and sit down and share some stories with you.
Sheila Nelson has been a force on the deck, and I am proud that 2 of the 4
BC officials that are here are from Northern BC. The days are long on the
officiating side, and the evenings longer, but when you look at what the
athletes are doing, it really makes it worth it. Tonight Sheila and I once
again have the greatest seats in the house as we are on deck officiating
and watching the athletes make their way to "get on the bus to London 2012".
Enjoy the next few days watching these events, and remember that great life
lesson - NEVER GIVE UP.

We still have stock of the Closed back female suit and Jammers. Open back suits are starting to arrive in Canada, and TAS is having some units over-nighted from Speedo so we can start to get them to swimmers going to Trials. Orders are on a first come first serve basis. If you have swimmers attending Olympic Trials who are interested in ordering their FS3 Super Elite suit, please contact us right away. We do have other levels of racing suits available for your swimmers. If they need a racing suit for Trials please contact us so we can get the order to you ASAP. FS3 Female Suit Retail $600.00 Team $450.00 (open or closed back) Super Elite Goggle Retail $100.00 Team $75.00 Elite Goggle Retail $75.00 Team $56.25 London Olympic Cap Retail $42.00 Team $31.50 Hair Management Cap Retail $35.00 Team $26.25 I have also included size charts for the new FS3 Racing system. The "SR#" is the "Speedo Racing" suit size. A size SR 24 is like a size 24, a SR5 is like a 25, etc. Feedback so far has been that swimmers are going up a size from their LZR Elite suit size. Therefore if they were a size 26 in the LZR Elite, they are probably a better fit in a size SR7 (or 27).

215 [PGBSC Blog] PGBSC Swim meet in April
As we know, the Barracuda swim club will be holding there swim meet in April. In preparation for the swim meet we are looking for several parents that would be willing to take on the following positions.
Electronic technical. This position involves assisting in setting up the trimming equipment, computers and associated equipment for the swim meet. You would be working in a team of 2 people and would need to be available at around noon on the Friday before the meet to assist in setting up the equipment. On the days of the meet, you would need to be at the pool about 1 hour before the meet starts (warm ups) to test and certify the equipment is functional. In addition you should be available during the meet, in case of problems. However this is the best position during the meet, because you will have a lot of free time during the meet to watch your kids swim.
Electronics operational. This position involves operation of the timing system during the meet. You will be working in a team of 6 people and need to be available about 1 hour before the meet and during the meet. This position allows you to get a behind the scene view of the meet and is very important to recording and verifying the result of the races.
No previous experience is required for these positions and training is provided. If you feel one of these positions is right for you, please contact Andy Godden, webmaster@pgbsc.org or 250-617-2503.
A friendly reminder, PGBSC has a policy that all parents must volunteer for one of the many positions available during the swim meet.
Thanks

204 [PGBSC Blog] Personal Accounts of the incident
In light of the information in the press release, I think it would be a good idea for participants to forward any personal accounts of the incident to me that you can. The investigation did not include any interviews of participants. I am trying to piece together the events of the day from a participant perspective. Thanks.

203 [PGBSC Blog] Fwd: Results of Investigation/Counselling
1. Attached please find a copy of the Friday March 2nd at 1 pm
press release regarding the investigation into the chlorine incident
at Sam Ketchum Memorial Pool in Williams Lake which occurred on the
morning of Feb. 26. The document is in three parts as I had pdf
scanning issues that prevented me from saving it as one document.
2. Now that the official word is out, it is a bit easier to make
sense of the incident and how to move forward. I met with the Mayor,
the Director of Community Services, and the Acting Manager of Human
Resources all of the City of Williams Lake in three separate meetings
on Friday afternoon after the press release to once again raise the
issue of counseling services. The Acting Manager of Human Resources
had already been in contact with local counselors to get an idea about
the best course of action for this situation. The suggested course of
action has two steps:
a. A group counseling/debriefing session for swimmers and
parents from each club. This would mean a meeting in Prince George,
Quesnel and Williams Lake.
b. Possible one-on-one or family counseling for swimmers and
their families having the further difficulties.
3. As a first step, the Mayor of Williams Lake would like to
make a call to each of the clubs on Monday March 5. It is my belief
that the club president would be the most appropriate person to call
from each club.
4. As a second step, Acting Manager of Human Resources, Heather
Silvester, would also like speak by phone to a club contact, most
likely the club president again, to make arrangements for the group
counseling/debriefing session, and to discuss other possible
counseling needs. It would be my suggestion that the calls could
occur together, with Mayor Cook holding her conversation with the club
president first, then turning the phone over to the Heather
Silvester, or a conference/speaker phone setup.
a. Please forward to me a phone number and time for a Monday
call to me by Sunday March 4, evening.
5. As time goes on, medical and mental health issues are
arising. It is important that I am kept abreast of these developments
as we move forward to finding solutions and closure to this situation.
