200 [PGBSC Blog] Counselling and Chlorine Gas detectors

Subject: Counselling and Chlorine Gas detectors

Instead of creating a string of emails that you will need to save and sift through, I will be reusing the same email and adding to it, as I get answers to the questions you ask.   The new information will be at the top of the email and the title will alert you to the topic of the new information.  Hope this is helpful.

1.       Counselling – The city does not have a plan at the moment for counseling services for swimmers and families affected by the Chlorine leak.  The Director of Community Services has passed on this request to those above him for consideration.  I have reminded him of the urgent need and timeliness for that service.  I'll keep you posted.

2.       Chlorine Gas Detectors – from the Director of Community Services, "We have them in our chlorine room.  The industry standard is to have them in your chlorine room.  Our pool meets all applicable laws, regulations, etc.. with its current set-up."

3.       Personal Items - Many of the Spring Fling swim meet participants did get their things back from the pool after the incident last Sunday.  After the building was safe to enter, collection of those materials was done quickly by Bluefins adult volunteers  and city staff, and transported to the School Board office for dispersal.  If you have noticed that some of the items you have do not belong to your family, please call the Cariboo Memorial Complex front desk (250-398-7665) to make arrangements to get the belongings back to the rightful owners.  If you are still missing items, call the same number as left over items are in storage at the complex.

4.       Swim meet results.  Now that the emergent aspects of the chlorine incident have been dealt with, we can move on to other items.  I will be finalizing meet results this evening and results will be posted to the SNC site tomorrow.  Sorry for the delay.

199 [PGBSC Blog] results from CIS Swimming Championships and America East Swimming and Diving Championships

As many of you know, the club has 5 former members competing at the varsity level at the moment; Brian Yakiwchuk is in his final year at the University of Alberta, Kit Moran and James Burg are in their third year at Dalhousie, Grace Ni is in her first year at Simon Fraser University and Katie Mann is in her first year at New Hampshire.

Below are results from CIS Swimming Championships in Montreal.  Both Brian and Kit were in attendance.

Brian Yakiwchuk

400 free 4th 3:52.98 ranked 5th in the country

1500 free bronze 15:24.21 ranked 4th in the country

As for Katie Mann, she was named Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer and Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of the America East Swimming and Diving Championships.  It is the first time in conference history someone won both awards in the same year.

Her results (in yards):

200 im 2:01.32 gold (meet record and America East Conference record)

400 im 4:14.10 gold (meet record and America East Conference record)

Her 400 im time qualifies as an NCAA provisional time and ranks 42nd in the US

I do not have results from Grace Ni yet as she competes in the US with Simon Fraser.

197 [PGBSC Blog] Chlorine Incident Communication

Subject: Chlorine Incident Communication

To all that were affected by the chlorine incident at the Cariboo Memorial Complex last weekend, it is my hope that everyone is recovering from their exposure and emotional effects. I am thinking about you and working to get answers.

At this time, when things are under investigation, there are many questions being asked of pool complex administration about the incident.  It will be difficult for them to keep track of all the questions that are coming and even more difficult to make sure that all parties receive the answers they were looking for.

I have already been in contact with the Director of Community Services - City of Williams Lake, from my position as Director of Swim BC.  Swim BC is the governing body that provides the sanctioning of swim meets, and is also the provider of event insurance through BFL Group.  In my conversation with the Director of Community Services, he assured me that I would be one of the people who was apprised of developments in the investigation and would receive official answers to the chlorine related events of Feb. 26 at Cariboo Memorial Complex.

It is imperative, if we are going to get answers to our questions and a complete picture of what happened on the day, that all questions be channeled through one source.  As the official representative of the sanctioning body of the swim meet, and insurance holder, I would appreciate that all questions are channeled through me. For clubs, one person should be the contact with any questions you may have.  That person should pass questions on to me and I will work to get the answers for you.

By using this system, the Director of Community Services and his staff will not be getting repeat questions from the clubs involved, and all clubs will get a complete picture, based on the answers to all questions.

I realize that this has been a trying and difficult time for everyone.  Getting good information and answers to your questions will go a long way to helping everyone move forward from this incident.

I'll keep you posted on developments.

196 [PGBSC Blog] Insurance Coverage

Subject: Insurance Coverage

Once again, it is my hope that everyone is recovering well from the chlorine incident at Cariboo Memorial Complex this past weekend.  For those club members that may have incurred medical costs beyond their extended health benefit coverage, there may be an opportunity to make a claim through the Swim BC coverage that clubs purchase for their athletes.  To gain more information on this possible opportunity, members can get more information from the Swim BC website.

1.       Go to www.swimbc.ca

2.       Go to the Club Administration  menu

3.       Go to Fundraising and Insurance Forms

4.       Carefully read the instructions and then use the Accident Claim Form link to print out the form.

Please pass on this information to affected club members.

195 [PGBSC Blog] Updates on PGBSC website

Hi Barracuda Parents,

We now have a tab on our Barracuda website labelled "Parents".

The scroll down menu under the Parents tab includes such information including:
The "What-to-Do List" for Swim Meets
Fundraising
Social Events
Equipment
Team Aquatic Supplies (where you can place an order for new equipment and have it mailed directly to you! Plus, enjoy the 20% club discount!)
Swim BC Time Standards
Swim Canada Meet List
Swim Meet Packages (Lists all the events, times, and details for each swim meet)
Swim Meet Accommodations (Shows the room block that has been booked for the team, including the special group room rate)
Psych Sheets (Lists all of the swimmers at a meet, every event they are entered in, and their placement according to their entry time.)

I update these last three (Swim Meet Packages, Swim Meet Accommodations, and Psych Sheets) on a regular basis.
For those of you who are newer at this:
- it is nice to print off the Swim Meet Package and bring it along as reference.
- I negotiate for a special room rate; my goal is to find accommodations at a reasonable price and a location as close to the pool as possible.
- the Psych sheets are only available a few days before the meet (usually only at meets that are "higher levele" (AAs, AAAs, etc)

193 [PGBSC Blog] Traveling to Williams Lake Friday 24 feb 2012 - Highway 97 closed

Subject: Highway 97 closed

thought that this travel advisory might be of interest to folks traveling to WL this afternoon:

Highway 97 Both directions Closed in both directions 5.5 km north of Junction with Highway 26, in Quesnel because of Vehicle Incident. Estimated time of opening is 4:00 pm. Confidence level low. Next update 11:30 am. No Detour available. Updated on Fri Feb 24 at 10:11 am. (ID# 129337) (http://www.bchighway.com/report/cariboo.shtml).

Should probably wait before heading down until that closure is cleared up.

In addition to that closure, road conditions are sketchy all the way down.

179 [PGBSC Blog] FS3 Racing System

Hello,

Orders for the FS3 Racing System are starting to trickle in. We are taking orders on a first come first serve basis with regards to our initial shipment from Speedo. If you have swimmers attending Westerns,  CIS or Trials who are interested in ordering their FS3 Super Elite suit, please contact us right away. We do have other levels of racing suits available for your Provincial level swimmers.  If you have received this email, and are no longer involved in ordering for your club, please contact us so we can update the account's information.

At this time, we have the FS3 Super Elite jammers and Long Olympic Silicone cap in stock. We are pending shipment from Speedo Canada for the female FS3 Kneeskins, Hair Management Cap, and the Super Elite and Elite style of goggles. We are anticipating the arrival of these items within 2-3 weeks. Below is the available team pricing TAS is extending to you.

 FS3 Jammer                        Retail $400.00                    Team $300.00

FS3 Female Suit                Retail $600.00                    Team $450.00

(open or closed back)

Super Elite Goggle           Retail $100.00                    Team $75.00

Elite Goggle                        Retail $75.00                       Team $56.25

London Olympic Cap       Retail $42.00                       Team $31.50

Hair Management Cap   Retail $35.00                       Team $26.25

I have also included size charts for the new FS3 Racing system.  The "SR#" is the "Speedo Racing" suit size. A size SR 24 is like a size 24, a SR5 is like a 25, etc. Feedback so far has been that swimmers are going up a size from their LZR Elite suit size. Therefore if they were a size 26 in the LZR Elite, they are probably a better fit in a size SR7 (or 27).

177 [PGBSC Blog] Stroke and Turn Course

Hi Everyone

We are having a stroke and turn clinic on Saturday, February 4th from 8 – 11 am. This is a great clinic for parents with swimmers in the competitive level so that you have a better understanding of what the judges are looking for when your swimmer is swimming a race. Also, this clinic is the next step as parents to further your understanding of the sport, as well as advance to a higher position as an official.
For those that have signed up for the clinic or those thinking of attending, you will need to look over some required reading material. This can be located at www.bcsoa.ca  look up courses then find stroke and turn. We would like you to read the material so we can have more time on deck to watch swimmers and the strokes. Oh yes you might get wet during the clinic, so dress accordingly.

Hope to see you there....
